Washington,
Jul 17, 2008 -
U.S. Senators Blanche Lincoln and Mark Pryor along with U.S. Representative John Boozman (AR-03) today announced the Fort Smith Fire Department and Crawford County Rural Fire District Three are recipients of more than $160,000 in grants from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency, in cooperation with the U.S. Fire Administration.
“As first responders, our local firefighters play an integral role in keeping our communities safe,” Lincoln said. “I applaud these fire departments for seeking out these federal dollars for additional training and better equipment so they can continue to protect the citizens of their communities.”
“These fire departments provide exceptional fire, medical and rescue services to the Eastern Arkansas community,” said Pryor. “It is essential that they have the necessary resources and equipment to effectively get their job done.”
“It’s great that communities continually seek improvements for better ways to protect their firefighters as well as provide safety to citizens,” Boozman said. “This is a great investment that these departments can be proud of.”
The Fort Smith Fire Department will use its $43,200 to buy three washers and dryers for fire uniform gear.
Crawford County Rural Fire Department District Three in Mountainburg will use its $119,107 to buy Self Contained Breathing Apparatus.
Arkansas fire departments received more than one million dollars from this latest round of the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program announcements. The program is intended to strengthen the country’s overall level of preparedness and ability to respond to fire and fire-related hazards.
