Washington, Jun 10, 2008 -

U.S. Representative John Boozman (R-AR), the Ranking Republican on the Veterans Economic Opportunity Subcommittee, today introduced legislation aimed at improving opportunities for service disabled veteran-owned small businesses.

The Boozman bill, H.R. 6221, requires the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and its agents to set aside at least three percent of their contracting funds to purchase goods and services from service disabled veteran-owned small businesses.

“This is crucial to promoting veteran-owned businesses. Using agents such as other government agencies to provide contracting services cannot relieve VA from its responsibility to the disabled veteran business community. Veterans not only serve this country with their time and sacrifices, but also with their contributions to the business world,” Boozman said. “This bill reinforces business contracting opportunities at the VA which must set an example for the rest of the Federal government.”

The bill requires the VA to coordinate with any agent to ensure the three percent provisions are being met.

This legislation fixes a loophole in Public Law 109-461, the “Veterans Benefits Healthcare and Information Technology Act of 2006”, that contained several provisions from H.R. 3082 introduced by Boozman in 2006 to enable the VA to meet contracting goals for service disabled veteran-owned small business at the Department of Veterans Affairs.

The Veterans Affairs Economic Opportunity Subcommittee will hold a hearing on H.R. 6221 next week.
