Washington, Mar 20, 2008 -

U.S. Representative John Boozman(R-AR) announced more than one and a half million dollars in grants to Northwest Arkansas.

Along with Senators Blanche Lincoln and Mark Pryor and Representatives Vic Snyder (AR-02) and Mike Ross (AR-04) Arkansas received $7,660,734 in grants from the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) for the state of Arkansas.  Grants were awarded through three HUD programs: the Community Development Block Grants (CDBG), the American Dream Downpayment Initiative (ADDI), and HOME awards.

The CDBG program provides annual grants to states and local units of government to develop viable urban communities by providing decent housing and a suitable living environment, and by expanding economic opportunities, principally for low- and moderate-income persons.

A new initiative under the HOME program is the ADDI, which will promote homeownership opportunities by providing necessary resources for downpayment and closing cost assistance to low-income and minority households.  The HOME program helps to expand the supply of decent, affordable housing to low- and very low-income families by providing grants to states and local governments to fund housing programs that meet local needs and priorities.

“These grants are important tools Northwest Arkansas can use to continue growth in the area,” Boozman said. “The opportunities Arkansans will get thanks to this funding will go a long way to enriching their lives and shaping their futures.”

“These grants are vital to the well-being of Arkansas’s cities and local communities,” said Lincoln.  “The resources from these grants will create jobs, spur economic development and small business opportunities, and expand home ownership in communities throughout our state—making the American dream a reality for more Arkansans.”

“These grants will provide countless Arkansas families the opportunity of affordable housing and financial stability,” Pryor said. “It’s a smart investment that will pay off in more jobs, economic growth and improve the quality of life in several of our communities.”

“By assisting neighborhoods to rebuild or assisting families to purchase a home, this funding helps our communities from the ground up,” said Congressman Vic Snyder. “I believe improving residential infrastructure and providing more affordable housing enhances the quality of life for Central Arkansas and the entire state.”

“This significant federal investment will go a long way toward continuing growth in Hot Springs and Pine Bluff, as well as cities throughout Arkansas, by providing new economic development opportunities,” said Ross. “I am proud to join with my colleagues in the Arkansas Congressional Delegation to announce this vital funding and I will continue fighting on behalf of working families in Washington.”
