Washington, Dec 15, 2008 -

U.S. Senators Blanche Lincoln and Mark Pryor and U.S. Representative John Boozman (AR-03) today announced more than $140,000 in grants for Third District fire departments through the Department of Homeland Security’s Assistance to Firefighters Grants (AFG) program.

AFG provides fire departments and EMS organizations the tools and resources necessary to protect the health and safety of the public and emergency response personnel.

“As first responders, our local firefighters play an integral role in keeping our communities safe,” Lincoln said. “These federal dollars will allow volunteer firefighters in the Third District to continue to provide the best possible service to families. I remain committed to ensuring that our state has the resources it needs to keep Arkansans safe.”

“Arkansas firefighters repeatedly tell me about the importance of these grants and how they enable them to receive training and equipment their departments would otherwise be unable to afford,” said Pryor.  “I’m pleased these communities will benefit from this federal assistance.”

"The importance of having our first-responders as fully equipped as possible and giving them the proper training keeps us all protected,” Boozman said. “I am proud of the community leaders who had the foresight to apply for these important funds, and I encourage others to utilize the tools we have available at the federal level.”

The following departments have been awarded AFG grants to improve operations and safety:

·        White Bluff-Rye Hill Volunteer Fire Department  - $75,050
·        Central City Volunteer Fire Department  - $42,187
·        Hickory Creek Volunteer Fire Department - $24,510

AFG will award approximately $500 million in competitive grants from FY 2008 funds.
