Boozman Votes to Restore Highway Funds
Fewer Drivers Forces Congress to Transfer Millions
Washington,
Sep 18, 2008 -
U.S. Representative John Boozman (R-AR) voted to transfer $8 million to continue upgrades on America’s highways.
Department of Transportation officials estimated the funds for highway improvements would be depleted in late September because the collections from fuel taxes are decreasing.
“We may be forced to find alternative funding methods to support our highway programs,” Boozman said. “The increased prices at the pump are forcing Americans to change their driving habits and ultimately, that means fewer dollars to spend for highway improvements.”
Statistics from the U.S. Department of Transportation show that, since last November, Americans have driven 53.2 billion miles less than they did over the same period a year earlier. With a federal tax of 18.4 cents per gallon of gasoline going to the Highway Trust Fund, there are fewer dollars to spend.
