Washington, Sep 9, 2008 -

U.S. Senators Blanche Lincoln and Mark Pryor and Representative John Boozman (AR-03) today announced more than $62,000 in funds to Third District law enforcement agencies for equipment improvements.

The Fort Smith Police Department and Sebastian County Sheriff’s Department will receive a $38,435 grant and the Fayetteville and Springdale Police Departments and the Washington County Sheriff’s Department will receive a $24,316 grant from the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG).

“As first responders, local law enforcement units play an integral role in keeping our communities safe,” Lincoln said. “These federal dollars will allow officials in Northwest Arkansas to continue to provide the best possible service for residents.”

“Local law enforcement is our first line of defense against violence, drugs and crime,” said Pryor.  “The Byrne grant program is a proven and effective source that provides officers with the tools and training necessary to keep our communities safe, and I will continue to fight for this program’s funding.”

“Making sure our law enforcement agencies are equipped with the tools they need to protect our communities is essential,” Boozman said. “These grants are a great investment and the agencies will be utilizing the funds in the ways that best help them.”

The Fort Smith Police Department and Sebastian County Sheriff’s Department will use funds to purchase equipment that allows for better communication between law enforcement agencies in the county. Fayetteville, Springdale and Washington County law enforcement agencies will use more than $8,100 of their grant to purchase equipment to increase officer safety.

The JAG program allows for the support of a broad range of activities for preventing and controlling crime.
